Last Revised: November 21, 2021.The National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG), conducted by NCHS, collected detailed data on cohabitation, marriage, divorce and remarriage. According to the Current Population Survey, 2021 ASEC Supplement, there are some 131.4M married adults age 15+ in the U.S., not counting 4.5M who are separated. In 2016, the divorce rate for both men and women was 8 per 1,000, sig-nificantly lower than the 2008 estimate of 11 for women and 10 for men. The divorce rate is defined as the number of people reporting a divorce occurring in the past 12 months per 1,000 population 15 years and over (separately for men and women). ![]() A study tracking married couples over a 10 year span found lesbian marriages were most likely to end in divorce. The lesbian divorce rate is much higher than the divorce rate between men: in the same period on average 100 women and 45 men divorced per year (i.e., Lesbian divorce rate = 14%, Gay Male divorce rate = 7%). The number (16 097) suggests a decline of 7 613 (32,1%) divorces from the 23 710 cases processed in 2019.
